Time to ditch disposable grocery bags
In defense of smart plastic bag useRe “Time has come to ditch disposable grocery bags,” Jan. 2 Community View:
Some points to consider:
? A 7 gram bag that can hold 10 pounds of groceries is a highly efficient scientific and engineering marvel. Ten bags will weigh less than the cardboard and paper containers of the food I buy at the grocery, or for that matter, one paper issue of The Journal News.
? We save all the plastic bags in a kitchen drawer, and they are reused as wastebasket liners, to carry lunch to work, protect papers and files when it rains, carry wet clothes from the gym, among other things. If bags are banned from stores, we will not save money because we will have to go out and buy them.
? Fresh bags are clean and sterile. If we have to wash reusable bags stained with meat juice I will consume about 30 grams of soap, 10 gallons of water, and perhaps 50g of natural gas to heat the water and the clothes dryer.
? Bags do not litter the environment. ugg boots sale On a 28 mile commute to work the other day, I counted 20 plastic bags along the road. This is less than one bag per mile. Instead of writing about the issue, environmentalists would do their own health and the environment more good by walking around picking up bags.
? Bags and other plastic in the ocean are released by all countries. A large ugg boots sale amount in the Pacific was due to the tsunami that hit Japan. It is not clear what the benefit our own self flagellation with taxes and bans will do.
Why not create a dream job for teenagers, letting them cruise the Hudson and Long Island Sound in the summer in boats to retrieve plastic waste?
Legislate an end to ‘free’ plastic bagsRe “Time has come to ditch disposable grocery bags,” Jan. 2 Community View:
In 2007, as a Rockland County legislator, I began the process to reduce the use o ugg boots sale f plastic bags by attempting to pass legislation that would implement a fee at the checkout counter for these bags, based on the Ireland model.
Unfortunately in 2008, there was not a majority of county legislators supporting such action. We did pass legislation requiring stores of a certain size to provide bins for the collection of bags and for their recycling. I am gratified to see these bins in stores around Rockland but remain very disappointed that I was not able to promote the use of reusable bags by eliminating bags that appear to be free at the checkout counter. As clearly described, the cost of carryout bags is passed on to the consumer through the purchase price of products.
The environmental degradation from the manufacture and disposal of plastic and pap ugg boots sale er bags is well known. The hazards of plastic bags as litter are well documented, including the destruction of aquatic and avian life as these bags enter streams, rivers and oceans.
As a mother and a midwife who has attended hundreds of births, I am extremely concerned about the future of the Earth for our future generations and I remain committed to the call to every governing body at every level of government to do what is possible to promote the use of reusable bags by charging a fee to consumers for shopping bags.
